Second Chance Partners for Education ties curriculum to real world application. The alternative education model combines high school classroom learning and the application of knowledge in a work setting. The Second Chance alternative high school program is a way for high school students to participate in their own education and receive tangible rewards for doing well. Through Second Chance Partners students learn how to perform calculations and solve problems by tackling real world challenges, where the results are immediately apparent. This nontraditional approach energizes young people who have distanced themselves from the conventional high school model. In this setting, they see the relevancy between classroom lessons and what they’re doing every day on the job.
Working closely with their teacher, mentors and fellow workers, Second Chance high school students learn the value of teamwork, responsibility and good decision making. Setting goals and achieving success is the natural outcome. This hands-on learning community allows the progressive teacher to focus on students' achievements and success such as:
• 90% Graduation rate
• 98% Attendance record
Educators are able to concentrate on results, not the frustration of constraints. Class sizes are small (average of 7 students per class), affording ample opportunity for one-on-one interaction. The emphasis is on student centered education and the development of themed projects to demonstrate mastery of manufacturing material and concepts.
